OUR STORY

It all started when…

A child residing at Community House on Broadway, which serves as a local homeless recovery shelter, was unexpectedly struck by a vehicle after excitedly chasing a ball into the road. Thankfully, he did not sustain any injuries during this unfortunate incident! However, from this event emerged the inspiring idea for a dedicated youth activity center in Cowlitz County. The primary goal of this initiative would be to provide young individuals both at the shelter and within the broader community a safe and welcoming place to participate in various recreational activities. In 2019, CORE Health took the important step to collaborate with Community House on Broadway to apply for funding for this vital project through the Washington State Department of Commerce. Although our initial proposal was declined, we received some hopeful news about four months later when we were informed that they were reconsidering their previous decision. Ultimately, we were awarded an impressive $2 million grant! In the fall of 2021, we proudly opened our doors to the youth of our community. Our center not only provides a safe atmosphere for youth to explore new interests but also encourages them to engage in prosocial activities and access essential behavioral health services. CORE Health is actively present in 30 schools throughout Cowlitz County and consistently continues to expand our services to more youth and their needs for the community at large.
